Aging is INEVITABLE, but Growing OLD is a CHOICE!

Although the Fountain of Youth is a myth, we can age healthier.

According to research cited in a 2005 NY Times article, ‘Your Body Is Younger Than You Think’, the body renews itself at varying paces:

Skin: 2-4 Weeks; Hair: 6 years for women and 3 years for men; Liver: 150 - 500 days; Stomach and intestines: 5 days; Bones: 10 years (renewal slows as we age, bones get thinner)

Earlier this fall, while clearing my closet, I took inventory and discovered that although I love my life, I haven’t been showing much appreciation to my body. Hard truth: Over the last 7 years, I’ve gained 30 pounds and edged up from a size 10 to a size 14! Don't get me wrong, size 14 is a nice size -- but uncomfortable for me. This rapid weight gain has also affected my energy and health.

WHOA! Where's this going? I realize that this change has everything to do with my lifestyle choices…not enough exercise and more food than my body can metabolize. Pretty simple right?

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit." Aristotle

Energy IN (calories) - Energy expended (calories burned) = What you're looking at in the mirror (another hard truth)! Yep, I 'm taking responsibility.

So, today’s a new day! I choose to make healthier choices right now. That does not mean I'm giving up ALL of my favorite foods (hello shrimp and grits!).

I purchased the dress in the photo 2 years ago and have NEVER worn it! This journey is about more than the dress...it's really about how I want to age -- feeling and looking good! The dress is just motivation.

I will blog occasionally about my journey towards aging well with intention, vigor and strength! Join me and blog your results towards healthy aging -- what's your regimen?

Here’s to your health!
